Wooroloo shooting: Residents recount terrifying ordeal as gunshot victim fights for life

Residents in Wooroloo have recounted their terrifying ordeal after a man was gunned down and the normally quiet semi-rural area was sent into lockdown. Lorraine Walter and her husband Stephen were relaxing inside their Stokes Close home when they heard police sirens blaring. Concerned by the noise, Mrs Walter decided to investigate and raced towards the back of her property. As she reached Needham Road, she told The West Australian she saw a man lying motionless on the ground. “I heard voices, so I went out to the road and had a look, but police officers told me to go back,” Mrs Walters said. “I could see the body, the person on the ground. “There was the blue car with all the doors open, and he was just up a bit more, lying sort of on the side of the road. “He wasn’t moving at all. He was still as. The ambulance people were treating him.” “There were police around everywhere. “Who’s shooting who, is it gang related? There’s a lot going around at the moment. “I really don’t like it, but we have to live with it.” The gunshot victim was flown to Royal Perth Hospital by the RAC Rescue helicopter. He is in a critical condition in the intensive care unit. Police issued an alert to residents just before 9am advising them to stay indoors after receiving reports a man had been shot. Armed officers quickly swarmed the area, with roads in and around the intersection of Needham Road and Murauba Close shut down. The police helicopter and drones were also used in the major operation with one man taken into custody just before 10am. However, officers remain at the scene searching for others they believe may have also been involved. And, while details regarding the victim of the shooting or the gunman have yet to be revealed, Mr Walter said he believed the home at the centre of the incident used to be owned by bikies. “The neighbour’s house used to be owned by a couple of bikies, or some sort of gang, used to hear Harley’s (Davidsons) driving around,” he said. “It’s pretty common for people up here to have guns for hunting, but I think it must have been a drive-by as I didn’t hear shots, just sirens. “Usually, we’d hear our neighbours shooting their guns so it must have been a low calibre weapon as we didn’t hear the shots. Anything high powered, you would have noticed.” Another resident, Suzanne, said she saw a man receiving CPR on the side of the road before emergency services arrived. “We were just driving past and we saw cars parked on the side of the road and somebody getting CPR,” she said. “We thought it was an accident but we didn’t see any cars smashed. “We went past and there was just people looking really overwhelmed. “There was a lot of cars on the side of the road, and a caravan. It was a man giving him CPR.”
