House fire devastation as Tambellup property destroyed in accidental blaze sparked by citronella candle

A home in the Great Southern has been destroyed by fire, with investigators deeming the cause of the early morning blaze on Sunday as accidental. Residents of the home have been left devastated but were not injured in the fire after the building burnt to the ground. A triple-0 call alerted emergency services to the scene of a structure fire about 12.30am on October 5 on Garrity Street in Tambellup, 45km from Katanning. A Department of Emergency Services spokesperson said no people were in the house when crews arrived on the scene. The home was fully engulfed in flames and collapsed at 1.45am, according to DFES. Shortly after 2am following the home’s collapse, six appliances from Katanning Volunteer Fire Rescue Services and Tambellup Volunteer Fire and Emergency Services got the blaze under control. The fire was not extinguished until 5.30am, and DFES said no one was injured in the incident. DFES said authorities ruled the fire accidental after linking it to an unattended citronella candle that had set furniture alight. St John WA and police were not called to the scene.
