More than 400 drivers have been nabbed speeding in a school zone in a single afternoon.

A speed trap caught 401 vehicles travelling in excess of 40km/h as they passed through a crossing managed by two wardens on Stirling Highway near McNeil Street in Peppermint Grove, Perth.

Between 2.40pm and 4pm, 29 per cent of the 1400 vehicles travelling through the area were issued with an infringement notice.

Police data revealed that 281 motorists exceeded the speed limit by 10 to 19km/h, 26 by 20 to 29km/h and two motorists exceeded the limit by 30 to 39km/h.

The staggering number of speeding vehicles in the area comes just months after a warden at the crossing was clipped by a vehicle.

Road policing commander Mike Bell said the results of the operation is “very concerning” and noted officers will be returning to the location to undertake further speed enforcement duties.

“Children are vulnerable pedestrians and 40 km/h school zones are specifically designed to maximise the safety of both the children and traffic wardens,” Mr Bell said.

“It is imperative drivers comply with the school zone speed limit and direction of our hardworking traffic wardens. The statistics from this deployment were very concerning and my officers will revisit this location in the near future.”

WA Police said recruiting traffic wardens in the western suburbs had been difficult, but they encourage more people to sign up.
