Community cook-up as Boddington comes together to thank firefighters after dangerous Christmas blaze
The Boddington community has hosted a cook-up to thank local firefighters who gave up their time over the festive period to save the town from an out-of-control bushfire.
The fire started on December 15 and escalated on Christmas Day, causing residents to evacuate as it came within 2km of the town.
Saturday’s cook-up had about 200 people and about 30 fireys in attendance, creating a wholesome community atmosphere.
Shire of Boddington president Eugene Smalberger said the community event was a chance for the community to reconnect and catch up with the volunteers who had worked tirelessly to save the town.
“This was a chance to actually talk to the fireys and get to know what’s happening,” she said.
“It was nice to catch up with them and get some information.”
The family-friendly event was put together by members and organisations within the Boddington community.
“Everyone brought a plate and the two mines sponsored some activities for the kids and the Lions (club) put on a barbecue,” Ms Smalberger said.
“I think the best part was seeing everyone relaxed.
“The kids had their fun and the parents could also just sit down and relax and talk.
“It was a beautiful evening, so it was really lovely.”
