Narrogin residents are being asked whether they would like to see the town’s four major entry signs replaced with stone statements, at an estimated cost of more than $170,000.

The Shire of Narrogin opened a community consultation for new entry statements at the east and west entries on Williams Kondinin Road, and the southern and northern entries on Great Southern Highway.

Constructed in 2016, the current entry statements consist of a corrugated iron sheet gate embossed with the town name and motto topped with five colourful steel mini-silos.

Mock-ups of the new design show a solid rock-look structure with rust-coloured metal lettering and stencils, similar to the one outside the shire administration building.

Each of the proposed replacement structures are estimated to cost $42,750, with the total project cost equalling about $171,000, excluding GST.

To balance out the budgetary constraints, one sign would be replaced every year for the next four years, subject to community feedback.

Replacement of the existing silo-style entry statements was identified by the townscape advisory committee as a “high priority project” that would “enhance the visual identity and appeal of Narrogin”.

“The proposed designs were developed in consultation with the townscape advisory committee and are intended to create a modern and welcoming gateway into Narrogin while reflecting the community’s identity and pride,” the community consultation statement reads.

In 2021, shire officers opposed calls by the TAC to replace the current signs with stone wall designs, citing the estimated $75,000 project cost and “prematurity” of the idea, considering the signs were then only five years old.

Officers recommended the council revisit the replacement idea when the signs began deteriorating, and estimated a lifespan of at least five more years — a marker reached in 2026.

Feedback on the signage can be emailed to enquiries@narrogin.wa.gov.au, posted to PO Box 1145, Narrogin WA 6312 or dropped off in person to the shire administration office at 89 Earl Street.
