Controversy has erupted on social media over the ABC’s decision to showcase a rap song just before the 9pm Sydney Harbour fireworks show, traditionally reserved as a display for families and their children before the iconic midnight celebration.

Indigenous rap group “3 Percent” performed a song called “Our People” for the ABC’s coverage just before the 9pm fireworks, with rap lyrics backed by chorus singing and Indigenous dance.

Triple J’s Nooky, speaking with the ABC before the performance, heralded the song as a representation of “black excellence”.

Complaint 1But X, formerly known as Twitter, blew up with accusations the song was inappropriate for children and pushed political activism.

“Who at ABCaustralia thought it was a good idea to put an awful rap group on before the early kids fireworks and then spend a large chunk of the fireworks just showing projections on the bridge?” one person wrote.

“Daughter was so disappointed. Should have kept with the bluey.”

“I am sorry to say this wasn’t very kid friendly I am sorry I turned it on ooh and the fireworks just had no oomph,” wrote another.

Reaction 2“If that angry display was the family fireworks presentation, not sure what we’re in for at midnight,” another wrote.

“Why is everything so woke...just play some pop music and show the fireworks,” wrote another.

Some suggested the song included foul language, though this was not clear throughout the performance.

“Well, I guess any kids left out there who didn’t know any cuss words, now do. Well done,” another posted.

But others welcomed the performance and chastised the heated reaction to it.

“Great performances, local performers deserve to be recognised. Thank you,” Heather S wrote.
