Kununurra goes for gold in 7NEWS Top Tourism Town Awards

Kununurra is in the running for a major tourism title after being named a finalist in the 2026 7NEWS Top Tourism Town Awards.
The town is competing in the top tourism town category alongside Kalgoorlie-Boulder and Geraldton, with winners to be decided through a combination of public voting and industry judging.
Kununurra Visitor Centre chief executive Vivienne McEvoy said it was a proud moment for Kununurra and a wonderful recognition of the region’s unique landscapes, rich culture and welcoming community.
“On behalf of Kununurra Visitor Centre, it reflects not only the strength of our destination, but also the vital role our centre plays in supporting both visitors and local industry,” she said.
“Our team is dedicated to delivering high-quality information, personalised service and strong advocacy for our members, ensuring every visitor experiences the very best of Kununurra and the wider Kimberley.

“This acknowledgement also highlights the importance of our strong and ongoing collaboration with the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley, whose partnership is essential in driving destination development, marketing and visitor experience outcomes.
“Together, this collective effort reinforces our commitment to promoting Kununurra, supporting local businesses, and contributing to a vibrant, sustainable tourism industry that benefits the whole community.
“While the best way to experience Kununurra is by being personally invited to explore its wonders, our doors and arms are open to all visitors, because everyone is warmly welcomed to discover what Kununurra has to offer.”
Kununurra’s growing tourism reputation is also backed by award-winning local operators.
For travelling foodies, the town offers a scene that blends an ancient connection to the land with modern excellence.
The Gourmet Camp Oven Experience, a fine-dining experience under the stary Kimberley night sky, claimed two gold awards at the national Qantas Australian Tourism Awards in March.

Further cementing the local flavour is the Hoochery Distillery, WA’s oldest continuously operating legal distillery
Major events continue to draw crowds, including the Ord Valley Muster, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and the Gibb Challenge.
The 2026 Kimberley Moon Experience is also set to feature headline acts including Tina Arena, Boy & Bear and Budjerah.
Tourism Council WA chief executive Evan Hall said the awards recognised towns that go above and beyond for visitors.
“The 7NEWS Top Tourism Town Awards gives everyone the chance to recognise towns for the way they welcome and look after their visitors,” he said.
Public voting opened on April 2 and runs until May 1, with voters going into the draw to win a $5000 WA holiday prize.
Winners will be announced on May 26 at the Perth Airport WA Tourism Conference Dinner in Carnarvon.
