A raging bushfire is causing traffic chaos in Karnup, with commuters being diverted away from a major freeway.

Firefighters are responding to a blaze in scrub west of the Kwinana Freeway after it was first reported at 11.43am.

Four aircraft are assisting 16 ground crews with firefighting efforts.

A DFES spokeswoman said the fire is roughly two hectares in size. The blaze is contained but not controlled.

The Kwinana Freeway, in the City of Rockingham, has been closed northbound between Paganoni Road and Karnup Road.

Commuters are being diverted off the freeway via Paganoni Road while crews remain on site.

There is heavy smoke in the area and people are urged to drive with caution or avoid the area completely.

Police are in attendance assisting with traffic management and major traffic delays are expected.

A bushfire advice alert is also in place for people in the area bounded by the Kwinana Freeway to the east, Stakehill Road to the north, Harvey Road to the west and Amarillo Drive to the south in both Karnup and Baldivis.
