VideoSydney drivers are rushing to petrol stations to take advantage of the cheapest fuel prices in five years, with unleaded averaging just $1.52 a litre across the city.

An alert has been issued to Perth motorists as petrol prices across the metropolitan area are set to spike to up to 195¢ a litre on Wednesday, after the Federal Government halves the fuel excise.

The excise has been in place since the beginning of the US-Israel-Iran war, and had caused WA fuel prices to remain relatively low as the war threatened fuel supply.

The start of the new financial year will see the excise of 32¢ a litre halved, meaning prices are expected to jump by at least 16¢ a litre on July 1, according to Fuel Watch.

“Motorists in Perth and Mandurah are advised to fill up now if they need to, with petrol prices set to rise tomorrow,” a FuelWatch statement said.

“Drivers are also urged to only purchase the fuel they need to fill their vehicles, not to stockpile.”

FuelWatch has also urged motorists to shop around, as at least 41 outlets will still be offering petrol for under 150¢ per litre, which could save at least $42 for a 60-litre.

Where to find the cheapest fuel in Perth on Tuesday:

  • Metro Midvale in the east at 139.2¢ a litre;
  • Solo Hamilton Hill in the south at 136.5¢ a litre;
  • Solo Morley in the north at 136.7¢ a litre.

Where to find the cheapest fuel in Perth on Wednesday:

  • Petro Fuels Swan View in the east at 141.8¢ per litre;
  • Costco Casuarina in the south at 138.7¢ a litre;
  • Metro Wangara in the north at 139.2¢ a litre.

FuelWatch has reminded drivers that Costco fuel outlets are membership based.

The 16¢ increase is set to be in place until August 2 before prices skyrocket again, when the remaining excise discount will be completely removed.
