A senior couple have died while hiking up Mount Augustus near Gascoyne Junction.

Walkers made the sad discovery this morning, when they came across the body of a man in his 70s while hiking to the peak’s summit.

The man’s body was discovered about a 45-minute walk from the parking area, about 7.30am.

After police were called, it was established that the man had been travelling up the peak with a woman in her 60s — believed to be his partner.

A major search of the area was launched a short time later, but the woman was also found dead five hours later.

Police in the Mid-West Gascoyne region are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths and reports will be prepared for the Coroner.

The tragic discovery has resulted in the temporary closure of the Mount Augusta National Park by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

It comes just days after a 53-year-old woman passed away while hiking in Mount Augusta National Park.

None of the deaths have been deemed suspicious.
