Ben Harvey: Sister Project helps migrant women who face daunting task of starting new lives in a new country

“You must have some ding in you somewhere mate, or a bit of wog, only an Italian or a Greek would do something like that to save a few bucks.” I can’t remember what I had done during the latest chapter in our never-ending home renovation, but whatever the thrifty hack was, it impressed one of my neighbours. The people in our street, mostly migrants who came to Australia after the end of World War II, have been observing my DIY work for years. It’s been long-running entertaining for them because I am extremely cheap and reluctant to pay someone to do something I can do myself, regardless of how long the task might take me or how many trips to Bunnings it might require. The Greeks, Italians, Macedonians and Slavs around me are always quick to offer encouragement as they look at a new wall that’s on the piss, or as they eye off a wonky bit of decking. Being called an honorary wog or ding is something I take pride in because I believe the best thing to happen to Australia was the mass migration of southern Europeans after 1945. Could you imagine this country without that cultural and, more importantly, culinary influence? The thousands of “New Australians” who settled here built their wealth not through complicated financial investing but through old-fashioned hard work and saving. They built a house and paid it off. Then they built another house and paid that one off. And then again. And again. Seriously, I don’t know of one Italian who has ever sold a home. They managed to afford all this by eschewing all unnecessary spending and rinsing every dollar from every (begrudging) purchase. To this day, in my neighbourhood, if you can build it, you don’t buy it, and if you can’t eat it, you don’t grow it. Australia would be a culturally boring and financially poorer shadow of its current self were it not for all those boats fleeing the poverty of Europe 70 years ago. Even those of us with Southern Cross tattoos on our arms and “F--- Off We’re Full” bumper stickers would agree. But it wasn’t always thus. Assimilating those new cultures in the 1950s was a rocky process. Locals from British stock were distrustful of the social idiosyncrasies, and racism was more than casual; it was institutionalised. It was the same story in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when waves of Vietnamese refugees landed. Younger Australians enjoying a Banh mi or a rice paper roll would be surprised to learn the staff who served them their lunch used to be derided as “boat people” and the specific target of an urban terror campaign waged by an angry racist named Jack Van Tongeren. Today, close to one million Australians have Indian ancestry. The country’s diaspora is writ large in Australia courtesy of a common colonial history. But even a shared distrust of the British and love of cricket didn’t prevent racial tension in Melbourne in the noughties after Indian students were targeted by thugs and criminals. History shows that it takes a long time for migrant communities to assimilate. It’s not easy. Which brings us to the rather long-winded point of this column For the past six years, Tracey Cave has been at the forefront of this social challenge. From an unassuming shopfront in Ellenbrook, her support service — Sister Project — has helped hundreds of migrant and refugee women who have faced the daunting task of starting new lives in a new country. Sister Project gives free English lessons, provides business mentoring, hosts cooking demonstrations and does all manner of other things that make becoming “Strayan” a little easier. Tracey has focused her 160 programs on helping family matriarchs because she believes in the African proverb: “If you educate a man, you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman, you educate a nation.” The Sister Project is self-funded, with space within the Ellenbrook property leased out to community-focused organisations such as North Metro TAFE, Multicultural Futures, Helping Minds, Midlas, Ability WA and Centrelink. The organisations get a good rate, and the women who attend Sister Project get access to wrap-around services they need. It’s a win-win. Well, it was until renovations and a late-arriving COVID hangover meant Tracey fell behind on her rent. Her landlord, who comes from migrant stock, has been extremely accommodating, but he also has bills to pay, and the Sister Project now faces losing its tenancy. Tracey has got the organisation back on level financial pegging day-to-day but needs a bit over $100,000 to clear the organisation’s various IOUs. That’s not chump change for a charity (or a journo who can’t afford to pay qualified tradies to fix his house), but it’s a mere 0.0031 per cent of the $3.14 billion the Cook Government allotted to the Department of Communities in last week’s State Budget. I know a lot of that money is earmarked for set projects, but there’s surely a bit of wriggle room. Paul Whyte proved that when he swindled $22 million from the department without anyone noticing. If you are reading this, Communities Services Minister Sabine Winton, please see whether there is anything that can be done to help the Sister Project. Your bureaucrats will no doubt demand some kind of business case to justify the appropriation (I would have thought “humanity” would be a good enough reason, but what would I know), so how’s this for a return-on-investment proposition? If the support provided by Sister Project means just two mums obtain jobs and stop relying on welfare, then taxpayers have got their money back within 12 months. Even the most miserly treasury wonk would say that’s a good deal.
