Laura Newell: If it proves a UK election winner, could national service head for our shores, too?

It’s election time over in the UK and, staying true to recent political form, the first policy pledge from the incumbent government might best be described as offbeat. The return of mandatory national service for all 18-year-olds is Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s first wild pitch after he announced a snap election set for July 4. If he wins, he promises that all young’uns just finishing 12 years of mandatory schooling will be forced to either spend a full year in the military, or give up a weekend each month for a year to some form of volunteering with organisations like the NHS, fire service or charities. To be paid for partly out of a fund designed to help rebuild impoverished areas, the $4.8 billion scheme would, according to Mr Sunak, open doors for teenagers that they otherwise wouldn’t get through. (The more left-leaning cynics might say it will simply bolster the ranks of countless charities that have had to step up and fill the void in community services following years of Tory austerity measures). At the same time, Mr Sunak is at pains to distinguish it from conscription, pledging that refusal wouldn’t lead to jail time, rather “non-criminal sanctions”. Perhaps predictably, the opposition Labour party has trashed the idea as a “gimmick”. That was quickly followed by the Liberal Democrats who labelled it “nonsense”. Even Nigel Farage stuck his oar in, saying it was a “joke” (a bit rich coming from the Brexit campaign’s joker-in-chief). One former chief of the UK’s navy went even further, branding it “basically bonkers”. But if online comments are to be believed, everyday Brits aren’t all so sure it’s a bad plan. Those especially keen seem to be those aged over 65, many practically cock-a-hoop that those young “lazy bludgers” might have to “get away from their computer screen and work for their benefits”. Perhaps we shouldn’t shout too loudly about the non-means-tested UK pension scheme, which pays out $425 a week to over 66s, the fact that most of those supporters had the chance to get a free education, or that an 18-year-old in the UK now faces a bill of almost $54,000 for a three-year degree. I do wonder if Mr Sunak ever thought about opening other doors for these youngsters by dumping those fees first imposed by a Labour government in 1998? As in all explosive political debates, there are definitely those in the middle raising legitimate and reasonable points of view: perhaps it might be a good way to level the playing field for kids who aren’t academically minded, nor from wealthy backgrounds; what use will they actually be in any of the places they work in (I mean they aren’t going to be performing brain surgery), will they actually be more a burden than a help; is this just a first step toward necessary conscription in an era where many first-world countries have foolishly cut defence spending to the quick? Sadly, I suspect so many of those mainstream middle voices will be lost among the extreme bleating of election fever. And it’s a warning shot to us here in Australia as we inevitably barrel towards our next Federal vote. Such eye-catching plans may well just become part of the norm as pollies bet the bank on them, hoping to cut through political apathy in an age where so many believe “all parties are the same”. Certainly, if Mr Sunak wins, I’m going to predict some bright spark over here is bound to hitch their wagon to the same strategy and Bob’s your uncle — whether for good or bad — here comes a national service plan for Australian youngsters, too.
