The Elizabeth Hotel and Residences: Fears over latest Elizabeth Quay jewel in crown after delays

The Elizabeth Hotel and Residences — the latest jewel in the crown at Elizabeth Quay — should have been opening about now. But news on the 358-room luxury hotel and another tower with 220 apartments by developer CA & Associates has been non-existent and especially after the recent resignation of Carolyn Turnbull. It is the latest delay for a project besieged by them for years. Construction started in 2019 but the first glass was not installed until 2022, with COVID construction delays blamed. In June 2024, Ms Turnbull was announced as the chief executive of The Elizabeth Hotel and Residences, fresh from her departure as managing director of Tourism WA. “I am thrilled to announce my appointment as the chief executive officer for Victor Goh’s expanding hotel and hospitality portfolio,” she said at the time. “I look forward to spearheading the completion and opening of the prestigious Elizabeth Quay projects.” In an interview with Ms Turnbull last August, The West Australian reported that the hotel was planned to open within 12 months and she was overseeing the finishing touches and the recruitment of top talent for its restaurants and other facilities. There has been no confirmation on when the Elizabeth Hotel will open its doors. But Ms Turnbull wasn’t hanging around. She has taken up a new position in Dubai, as CEO for Nammos Hotels & Resorts, it was announced. “Carolyn is a visionary leader with a deep understanding of modern luxury. Her global experience and guest-centric mindset align perfectly with our ambition to redefine luxury hospitality, Nammos chairman, Petros Stathis, on Thursday said. Malaysian architect and developer Victor Goh is the visionary reshaping Perth’s skyline. His recruitment of Ms Turnbull was seen as a coup at the time. The Sunday Times contacted CA & Associates for any news on the development. Calls and messages were unanswered on Friday. The development has flagged by Tourism WA as one of the exciting new stays for 2025. “Imagine waking up to breathtaking waterfront views at Elizabeth Quay. Opening in late 2025, this luxury hotel promises world-class amenities and a touch of glamour in the heart of the city,” it entices. The two glass towers on the western flank of the Quay are believed to have a market value of roughly $1 billion. The taller south site will include an art gallery and viewing deck.
