Queen Mary reveals the ‘endearing’ Aussie trait she noticed on her tour Down Under with husband King Frederik

Queen Mary has revealed the one “endearing” Australian trait that she loves as the Danish royals officially wrap up their tour Down Under.

Mary and her husband King Frederik X hosted an evening in the Garden reception at Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens where they thanked Australians for their hospitality.

Mary delivered a speech to the crowd of guests and officials, speaking fondly of the country she was born and raised.

“It touches me deeply that my family and I are always welcomed with such warmth and interest, and that we continue to have a place in the hearts and minds of Australians,’ she said.

Mary added that it was one particular trait she noticed while being back on Australian soil.

“Being remembered is nothing ever to be taken for granted... and it is an endearing Australian trait that when an Australian is considered to do well abroad, you take pride in the fact that they are one of your own.

“And forever on, they will be known as ‘Our [insert name here]’,” she said as the crowd erupted in laughter.

Ever since the Tasmania-born Queen became a member of the Danish royal family in the early 2000s, she has been affectionately referred to as ‘Our Mary’ by Aussies.

She wrapped up her speech with a heart-warming message: “I feel so incredibly privileged that my roots belong to both Denmark and Australia. Thank you.”

Mary returned to her hometown of Hobart on Thursday, marking the first time she had been back in almost two decades.

When asked about her favourite part of the tour, Mary offered a simple answer: “Australians”.

The last day of her tour started with a Welcome to Country at Government House, followed by a boat tour of kelp restoration areas.

She even managed to get up close and personal with a lobster.

In the afternoon, the Danish royals greeted crowds of people lining Hobart’s waterfront where Mary accepted flowers and notes.

People watched from balconies with some yelling out “welcome home Mary”.
