Tales Of Outer Suburbia Shaun Tan’s bestselling illustrated anthology about growing up in Perth has been made into a 10-part animated series, starring British comedy legend Dawn French. The series, which premiered last week at Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France and will eventually air on the ABC, is based on Tan’s memories of his childhood in Perth’s northern suburbs. It follows “almost 13-year-old” Klara and her six-year-old brother Pim as they move to Outer Suburbia with their newly single mother Lucy. French will voice the siblings’ grandma, as their summer holiday turns into a series of surreal adventures involving “weird and miraculous phenomena”. Tan, an Academy Award-winning filmmaker, is creative director. Rita Ora The pop star has dropped a new single, Heat, with a playful, sun-soaked energy that could be just the thing to ward off a winter chill. The song, produced by Peter Thomas (P!nk, Selena Gomez, Teddy Swims), was co-written by Lelan, Michael Matosic and Perth’s own Troye Sivan. Ora first sang it on stage in Miami while supporting Kylie Minogue on her Tension tour, and the music video was filmed on Miami Beach, inspired by the work of legendary photojournalist Martin Parr. Pride And Prejudice Ahead of Dolly Alderton’s TV adaption of Jane Austen’s iconic novel, Audible is giving it new life with its star-studded audio version. Babygirl’s Harris Dickinson will step into the role of Mr Darcy alongside BAFTA-winner Marisa Abela as leading lady Elizabeth Bennet. The duo will be joined by Glenn Close, Will Poulter, Bill Nighy and Marianne Jean-Baptiste to reimagine Austen’s timeless tale for the ears. The audiobook will be available from September 9. ALICE (in wonderland) Don’t be late:Don’t be late: this WA Ballet retelling of the Lewis Carroll story was a hit when first staged in 2019, and is expected to sell out when it plays another limited return season during the July school holidays. The collaboration with Hong Kong Ballet’s artistic director Septime Webre involves more than 200 costumes by Cirque du Soleil’s Liz Vandal, at least 160 props and a Jabberwocky puppet that is more than 5m tall and takes seven dancers to operate. The production is at Crown Theatre July 5-12 and tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster. Dine Italy This popular winter dining series is back at Cottesloe’s Il Lido, but this year it is pitting region against region. Every four weeks from Tuesday to Thursday, the restaurant will have a rotating menu, with paired wines, that showcase the best of two Italian regions.
