IN PICTURES: Indigenous students browse job prospects at 2025 Great Southern Deadly Jobs and Careers Forum

Retravision Stadium buzzed with ambition on Wednesday as hundreds of students from across the region gathered to explore future career pathways at the 2025 Great Southern Deadly Jobs and Careers Forum. More than 300 Indigenous students travelled from destinations as far as Katanning, Gnowangerup and Jerramungup to attend this years exposition, emceed by beloved Australian actor Ernie Dingo. Job prospects were wide and varied from the 30 exhibitors, whose stalls ranged from universities, hospitality companies and mental health not-for-profits to the Australian Border Force and Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. Impact Services career development adviser Tanya Conway, who organised the event in conjunction with the State Government, South Regional TAFE, the Jobs and Skills Centre and Worklink WA, said it gets “bigger and better” each year. “We’ve had a lot of great feedback already,” she said. “Everyone’s saying it’s the one of the best ones they’ve been to so far. “It’s important just giving kids, especially regional ones, ideas and options of what they can do when they leave school.” She said it was hoped the expo would give students an opportunity to find something that might be a perfect fit. Curtin University associate professor Rod Ogilvie said the event is also a valuable opportunity to enhance collaboration between agencies to ensure no young person falls through the gaps. “We know each other, but we don’t spend time together, a lot of us agencies,” he said. “It’s been mentioned several times today that there can be more collaboration, rather than everyone doing their own thing.” Mr Ogilvie said that as well as being an opportunity for inter-agency networking — and catching up with his cousin Ernie Dingo — the event shows regional students the potential for a different path. “Another thing is that the kids from Mt Barker or the kids from Jerramungup or wherever, they get to see what the other options are, apart from being on the farm or staying in Barker,” Mr Ogilvie said. “We’ve had lots and lots of enquiries about humanities, social sciences, and even if we only get one, that’s enough, that they can see there’s lots of opportunity out there for them.”
