Yarning together

The Broome Public Library’s Craft and Conversation group has been hard at work over the past few weeks, meeting every Thursday morning to create handmade items for those in need.
The dedicated group of volunteers get together to craft, connect, enjoy a cup of tea, and give back to the community.
Over the past month, the group have knitted and crocheted dozens of trauma teddies, more than 40 blankets, and several beanies, all for people in need.
These handmade acts of kindness are supported by the Shire of Broome and are carefully distributed across the community.
Shire president Chris Mitchell praised the volunteers for their generosity and community spirit.
“This is community spirit at its best — locals coming together to support one another in such a meaningful and thoughtful way,” Cr Mitchell said.
“The Shire is proud to see the Broome Public Library serve as a hub for connection, creativity and kindness.
“Initiatives like this remind us what makes Broome such a special place to live.”
A special collection of trauma teddies will be distributed by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Red Cross, while many of the blankets have been specifically designed for wheelchair users.
Other handmade items have been donated to Germanus Kent House and Kimberley Aged and Community Services.
The group is seeking yarn donations, especially dark-coloured yarn, which is best suited to the Kimberley’s pindan conditions.
Craft and Conversation meets every Thursday from 10am-noon at the Broome Public Library.
All are welcome to join the group, or drop off yarn donations during opening hours.
