Accused coward-punch killer Brodie Jake Dewar returns to court seeking bail variation in Tim Picton case

The man accused of killing WA Labor figure Tim Picton with a coward-punch outside a nightclub has faced court again after he was granted bail. Brodie Jake Dewar, 20, left the District Court Building on Monday afternoon surrounded by his family after the last-minute bail hearing was adjourned. Mr Dewar is accused of attacking the political strategist turned mining executive outside the Paramount nightclub in Northbridge at about 5.30am on December 27. His initial charge of grievous bodily harm was upgraded to manslaughter in February after the 36-year-old father-of-one died in hospital on January 19. Mr Dewar was initially granted bail, but it was revoked weeks later after he was charged in relation to another alleged coward-punch which occurred two days earlier on Christmas Eve. The alleged assault outside a Kalamunda Hotel left a man with a cut lip and chipped tooth. After spending some time in Hakea Prison, Mr Dewar was granted bail for a second time on March 3, this time by the Supreme Court. The prosecution did not oppose his release application despite the objections of Mr Picton’s family. Justice McGrath granted bail under 12 strict conditions including a curfew which allows early starts for his roof plumbing and gas fitting apprenticeship. He is banned from entering licensed premises, or leaving WA and had to surrender his passport. Mr Dewar isn’t required to report to his local police station — a 10 minute drive away in Forrestfield, instead he will be subjected to random visits from officers and will have to provide a breath test and a sample of urine for analysis. He was also required to provide a $10,000 personal undertaking and $20,000 surety. His bail hearing will be resumed on Thursday.
