Inquest into Townsville flooding deaths
An inquest is set to be held into the deaths of two men whose bodies were found in a large open stormwater drain during flooding in Townsville two years ago.
The bodies of 23-year-old Troy Mathieson and Hughie Moreton, 21, were found as water receded in the Townsville suburb of Aitkenvale after hundreds of homes were inundated.
Queensland Police's Ethical Standards Command was to investigate officers who had been searching for the men after an attempted break-in at a Dan Murphy's liquor store near the drain about 3am on February 4, 2019, media reported days later.
The bodies were found in the drain about noon the following day.
A pre-inquest conference will be held before state coroner Terry Ryan on August 16 in Brisbane.
The inquest - on a date yet to be decided - will look into what caused the men's deaths and whether the decision to categorise them as "wanted persons, instead of missing persons, was outcome changing".
It will also consider what caused their deaths and recommendations to prevent deaths in similar circumstances in future.
The monsoon trough caused rain for days and resulted in more than 1000 people evacuated from their homes.
