An elderly man has died after drowning while snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland.

Paramedics in a rescue helicopter rushed to Norman Reef near Port Douglas about 2pm on Tuesday after the man was found unresponsive in the water.

The man was snorkelling at Norman Reef when he became unconscious in the water.

Aged in his 70s, the man could not be revived despite the efforts of emergency services.

It’s not known whether he suffered a medical episode that led to his drowning.
