Fremantle’s Bella statue returned to seat at Bathers Beach
Fremantle’s beloved statue Bella has been replaced, but keen-eyed locals will notice she has also undergone a facelift.
The second incarnation of the 150kg bronze creation was returned to her seat at Bathers Beach yesterday, complete with an entirely new face.
The original was stolen in October and, though the thief was caught and brought to justice, the iconic artwork has never been recovered.
Nelson Rodrigues Jardim, 41, was jailed on August 12 for nine months over the theft.
CCTV cameras have been installed overlooking the new Bella to ensure she does not suffer the same fate as her predecessor, which the Department of Transport purchased for $48,000 in 2011 but was later valued at around $100,000.
Both statues were made by Fremantle sculptor Greg James.
