Tambellup golfer Tuhiwai McRoberts is $200 richer after bagging a hole-in-one on the par-three fifth at Katanning Country Club.

It was the first time in 24 years the 161-metre hole had been aced in competition and McRoberts pocketed the prize on offer from Ryan Chapman, general manager of local sponsor QFH MultiParts.

He had hit a hole in one before, at the same hole, but only in practice.

This time, using a three-hybrid, he did it when it counted, at a club day.

“I was stoked — it was a pretty good shot,” McRoberts said.

“I saw it hit the green but I didn’t see it go in.”

According to his taller playing partner, the ball bounced twice and disappeared down the hole.

A member at Tambellup, McRoberts works in Katanning and plays there occasionally as a guest when he’s in town.

He did not succumb to the tradition of buying everyone in the clubhouse a drink.

“They didn’t ask me to, so I didn’t have to, thank goodness,” he said.

The Upper Great Southern mixed foursomes championships were held at the club on June 15.

Michael Gillett and Nyaree Brown, from Williams, were the winners with a gross score of 83.

Nett winners were Wayne Jones and Kym O’Brien, from Boddington, who recorded a score of 70.
