Second round heroics help deliver titles for victorious pair Peter Tomlinson and Vanessa Stephens in Albany

Albany’s Peter Tomlinson and Nedlands’ Vanessa Stephens claimed the spoils at the annual Wittenoom Cup and Brenda Wittenoom Open respectively after an exciting weekend of golf in Albany.

The 36-hole stroke competitions are the region’s premier golf events, run annually at Albany Golf Club.

The men’s field attracted 144 players, and 100 women also competed across the two days.

Tomlinson had a dream start in his first Wittenoom Cup competition, scoring an impressive round of 65 on the second day after a 73 on Saturday to win by three shots from Cottesloe’s Gordon Tucker and fellow local Dave Cruse.

After the first round Tomlinson was eight strokes behind Neil Wilson but he stormed home on Sunday with a superb round to finish on 140 overall, six under his handicap, to defeat Tucker (141) and Cruse (141) while John Walker and Denmark’s Les Wolfe rounded out the top five after they both shot 142.

Bremer Bay’s Joe La Rosa had a fantastic weekend to finish in 20th place overall after hitting rounds of 75 and 74 to score a total of 149.

Philip Russell from Katanning scored rounds of 74 and 76 to have a combined score of 150 and finished 32nd overall.

Tambellup’s Andre Koch (154) finished in 56th place while Katanning’s Trevor McCarley hit a combined score of 162 to finish 103rd overall.

The trend of visiting competitors winning the Brenda Wittenoom Open continued as Stephens claimed the 2021 edition.

Stephens won the title in just her second Open, after she produced a superb second round to help her claim the Open after sitting in 19th place overnight.

Stephens shot a strong round off 66 on Sunday after hitting 74 on the opening day to finish on 140 overall and defeat day-one leader and Denmark Country Club’s Anna Wolfe by three strokes.

Tambellup’s Tracey Lamont had a great weekend to finish in 23rd position after hitting rounds of 78 and 73 to finish on 151 overall.

Katanning’s Wendy Russell finished 43rd in the Open after rounds of 75 and 80 left her with a total of 155.

Fellow Tambellup competitor Karan Murray hit rounds of 77 and 81 to finish 56th overallwith a total of 158.

Cathy Wright from Kojonup scored rounds of 84 and 82 to have a total of 166 and finished 78th overall.
