The state-of-the-art Laverton Aquatic Centre has been put to good use in its first summer since opening late last year.

Situated in the far northern Goldfields, the $4 million centre opened in September, replacing the previous swimming pool, which was more than 50 years old.

The aquatic centre includes swimming lanes, a dunk pool and a variety of water features to keep local children active.

Centre pool manager Janine Row said families had flocked to the pool in the heat.

“We have up to 100 people in the pool when temperatures really spike,” she said.

“It is activity and it’s fun but it also helps decrease a range of health issues like eye and ear infections in the indigenous community.”

Ms Row said the centre tried to engage the community as much as possible by running activities such as aqua fit and swim for fruit for kids.

“Children can come in for free, swim a set amount of laps and then receive a free piece of fruit,” she said.

“It is a way to get the kids active, eat healthier and it engages them into something constructive over the long school holidays.”

Coolgardie Pool runs a similar program and will visit Laverton Aquatic Centre on February 1, according to Ms Row.

“We’re going to have a little competition and a barbecue lunch — it’s a great way to bring the two communities together, especially because we’re so secluded,” she said.
