Marnus Labuschagne has cemented himself as the most in-form Australian batter ahead of the Ashes belting his fifth hundred of the domestic season which is only six weeks old.

Labuschagne started the summer alongside a peloton of batters vying to open in the first against England Test later this month.

But, as he hit his fifth ton for Queensland in eight innings in Brisbane on Monday, he asserted himself as one of many headaches for England with his return to the national team a lock ahead of the squad confirmation this week.

Labuschagne was at his busy best after surviving a close LBW shout, scoring his hundred off 109 balls before falling for 101 in the 46th over.

The 31-year-old has now amassed 679 runs across the Sheffield Shield and one-day competition across the past 47 days.

Once Labuschagne reached 50, his fifth ton to start the summer was seemingly inevitable.

In a sign of how easily he scored his ton, Labuschagne cruised at nearly 100 strike rate despite hitting just six fours and one six.

Last week after a rare failure in the Sheffield Shield, Labuschagne said he was in a much clearer headspace since being dropped from the Test side.

“Mentally I’m a lot clearer on my game and not getting too much deep thought into certain dismissals or methods,” Labuschagne said.

“It’s not the actual training in the nets, I absolutely love that, I can do that all day.

“But at times I feel like my technique gets in a space where I go home and I’m like, ‘Maybe I want to do this or maybe I want to go and try that’.

“Now I’m trying to stay out of my own way really and go out there and trust my skills when I get to the middle.“
