Half-price train fares aiming to boost Goldfields’ economy, drive tourism, and provide cost-of-living relief

Half-price Transwa fares have steamed into the new year, offering permanent cost-of-living relief to families across WA. As of January 1, following a State election commitment from the Cook Government, people rolling in and out of the regions via Transwa transport, including the Prospector train to and from Kalgoorlie-Boulder, will pay 50 per cent less. For non-concession card holders, people travelling to and from Kalgoorlie-Boulder will pay $100 for a return trip, while concession-card holders including seniors or students will pay just $50. Kalgoorlie MLA Ali Kent said she expected the initiative to be a “game changer” for people in the regions. “I speak to many people, and I know that this incentive will be a game changer for those who travel to Perth, not only for medical but it’s now more affordable for people to visit their families or head to concerts that are happening in Perth,” she said. “Hopefully, it will also encourage those in Perth and surrounds to come to Kalgoorlie to visit friends and family and for big events in town like the Kalgoorlie Cup or sporting games. “This initiative will provide a significant cost-of-living benefit for the Goldfields community, while also supporting regional tourism and hospitality businesses by making travel across WA more affordable and accessible.” The new train prices follow the government announcing regional capped airfare prices would continue until 2031, but with a price hike for high-demand periods. Kalgoorlie-Boulder Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Simone de Been said the Prospector train would most likely be an alternative for families who could not afford to fly.
