Jackson Dean Perkin: Declared serial family violence offender seeks bail for alleged assault of 4yo girl

A 34-year-old man accused of assaulting a four-year-old girl and spitting in her mother’s face when she asked him to take them to hospital is seeking to be released on the strictest form of bail. Jackson Dean Perkin pleaded not guilty to the charges of aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm and aggravated common assault during his video-link appearance in Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court on Thursday, before his lawyer launched a bail application. Bail was opposed by the prosecution, with Const. Kim Sullivan stating Mr Perkin was a declared serial family violence offender with a 16-page record consisting mostly of family violence and breach offences. The new charges against Mr Perkin allege he was in a family relationship with the four-year-old girl’s mother and after getting into an argument with the mum on January 16 in Castletown, he allegedly threw an object at the young girl, striking her near the right eye, causing a 4cm cut which bled. Police allege the blow left the girl unresponsive until paramedics arrived. It is further alleged he approached the mum as she held her unresponsive daughter on the ground and kicked the mum in the shin, causing a bruise. The mum allegedly asked Mr Perkin to take them to the hospital, and police say he responded by spitting in her face and walking away. Const. Sullivan said the girl did not require further medical treatment and was OK aside from a scar near her eye. He said the girl remained fearful she would be assaulted by others after the alleged incident and had only recently returned to school. When asked by magistrate William Yoo about the strength of the prosecution’s case, Const. Sullivan said there was a complainant statement and forensics had been obtained, which would now be analysed since not guilty pleas had been entered. Mr Perkin’s lawyer, who appeared via audio link, had to put forward exceptional reasons for bail to be considered due to him being declared a serial family violence offender. He submitted letters from three people, including Mr Perkin’s former partner who despite previously having “issues” with him, was supportive of him living with her family, including their seven-year-old son who she claimed was struggling since his arrest. Mr Perkin’s employer at Mallee Fencing Group also supported his release, stating he would continue to be offered employment and he was held in “high regard” with a senior role likely on the horizon for him.
