A petition to improve street safety in Eaton for wheelchair users has been accepted by the Shire of Dardanup.

Resident Peter Bacon submitted the petition to the Shire of Dardanup council on September 25, seeking funds to improve road safety in Lennard Street.

The petition called for traffic calming controls, pedestrian footpaths and upgrading roadside kerbing due to the realignment of nearby roads.

Mr Bacon said there were safety concerns for homeowners on the street who used wheelchairs.

“Lennard Street currently has two homeowners who are wheelchair reliant and they rely on the road to allow them access to the shopping centre and the foreshore walkways,” he said.

“The current roadside kerbing was not sustainable for increased traffic, as the roads will pose an issue for crossing over.

“The traffic calming controls will improve the road safety in our residential neighbourhood.”

The petition was accepted with the council voting unanimously on the item.

Chief executive officer Andre Schonfeldt will prepare a report to the council after investigating options to improve the street.
