WA winemakers say this year's vintage could be one for the record books, with grape picking in full swing in the Swan Valley.

John Griffiths, of Faber Vineyard, said in his 31 years making wine he had never seen grapes with such vibrant colour - a fantastic sign.

"People can expect the 2014 vintage to be a flavoursome, full-bodied wine," the Swan Valley and Regional Winemakers Association vice-president said.

Mr Griffiths said red grapes in the valley showed particular promise. White grapes also looked good but the hot weather was more positive for reds.

He said grape yields were average to below average but the quality was high.

Margaret River Wine Association chief executive Nick Power said it was a bit early to tell but growers were headed for another excellent vintage.

"This season depends on the weather from now on, but until now it's been great," he said.
