Tom French: Former Perth tradie has become Labor’s latest WA MP despite never aspiring to be politician

Former Perth tradie Tom French has told Federal Parliament he never aspired to be a politician. In his first speech to the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Labor’s latest WA MP said his passion for fairness and opportunity led him to run for Moore, which has not held by Labor in 35 years. He described himself as the “son of a painter, who was the son of a painter” who has worn many hats — an electrician, lawyer, publican and father. “I wasn’t born into politics. I come from working-class stock. I’ve poured beers, pulled cables, written briefs, and represented workers,” he said. “I didn’t run because I wanted to be a politician. I ran because I’ve seen too many people get shocked by the systems that were meant to shield them. “Your story doesn’t have to be polished or perfect to be powerful.” Moore has long been a Liberal stronghold, held by the party in 15 of the past 20 elections since its inception in 1972. It was the only Perth seat retained by the Liberals in 2022. Mr French spoke about his background with the Electrical Trades Union and how it had led him to a pathway to politics. “I believe in a strong union movement. I believe in workplace rights, fair wages, TAFE, and safe jobs,” he said. But he also drew on his love for music and the arts, citing a song from rock band Everclear, a poem by Martin Niemöller and the musical Hamilton. Mr French also shared his personal experience as a kidney transplant recipient and gave thanks to his brother who he said “saved his life” by donating and the doctor who oversaw his transplant.
