The controversy surrounding Nick Kyrgios has spilled off the tennis court with the 27-year-old facing domestic assault charges over an incident involving his former girlfriend Chiara Passari, according to a new report.

Kyrgios’ lawyer Jason Moffett confirmed the Australian star was aware of the “serious” charges which reportedly relate to him grabbing Ms Passari.

“It’s in the context of a domestic relationship,” Mr Moffett told The Canberra Times.

“The nature of the allegation is serious and Mr Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously.

Kyrgios is due in court next month.

Kyrgios is one of Australia’s most high profile and controversial athletes.

His fiery temper and outspoken exploits on the court have often landed him in hot water and the past week at Wimbledon has proved no exception as he has clashed with the media, fans and opponents.

He has been particularly combative during press conferences and even admitted spitting towards a spectator he labelled as “disrespectful” during his first-round win over Briton Paul Jubb. He called a female line judge a “snitch” in the same match.

And both Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas were given huge fines after their ill-tempered match after which the Greek said his opponent had “an evil side” to him.
