Teige Morrell wins NBL1 West MVP for second year in a row and sets sights on WNBL season for Canberra Capitals

NBL1 West women’s MVP Teige Morrell hopes becoming just the fourth woman to win the award in consecutive years inspires younger players to realise that their sporting dream is never over. Morrell is in career-best form as she closes in on her 30th birthday. She dominated the season while averaging 21 points and 13 rebounds per game and has already been rewarded with a contract to play for Canberra in the WNBL. Born overseas, Morrell’s victory last year came after she received permanent residency, opening the door for her to join Perth Lynx on the main roster The powerful forward’s wait also followed her winning the NBL1 Central MVP award in 2021. She said success is about never giving up. “I’m huge on continuing to persevere and I share this with young people all the time. If you want something, it is up to you to go and get it,” she said. “You have to put in the work. Even when you don’t get the results that you want, you just have to keep focusing on the little wins and development that you get every year so you know you are improving. The results come from that. “Last year was a huge relief and this year feels like a huge gift.” Morrell can’t wait to move to Canberra to continue chasing her dreams. She is determined to utilise the extra skills she has developed in the last 12 months while playing for the Lynx. Morrell made more three-pointers on the way to winning the MVP award than she did in the previous four seasons combined and is determined to improve even more. “What an honour to be noticed by Paul Goriss in Canberra,” she said. “I have to give huge credit to Ryan Petrik for expanding my game under his system. One of my goals this season was to improve my three-point shooting and the mindset to even take threes. That’s a huge win for me in player development. I’m really happy I am continuing to develop my game when I’m going on to 30. It’s such a blessing that I feel like my journey is just starting.”
