Seven months after losing Adam Cerra to Carlton, Fremantle fans will get their first look at what the Dockers got in return when exciting 196cm key forward Jye Amiss makes his debut on Friday night.

Snapped up with Fremantle’s first pick at no.8 in last year’s national draft, Amiss became Fremantle’s first top-10 key forward since Matthew Pavlich in 1999.

It was the selection the Dockers received from the Blues for Cerra, in addition to a future third-rounder.

A week after coach Justin Longmuir said Amiss was “around 80 per cent” fit and he didn’t want to throw the prized teenager out there before he was ready, circumstances opened the door with Longmuir without both key forwards Matt Taberner (hamstring) and Rory Lobb (COVID) for the first time.

“It’s pretty crazy. I didn’t think it would come this quick, but I’m just so excited,” Amiss said.

“It’s unfortunate circumstances to earn a debut in, but it does open up opportunities.

“I feel my form in the WAFL has been good. Having played on more mature defenders is going to help me, especially coming into the AFL where there’s going to be even bigger bodies as well.”

Boasting a slow, methodical set shot run-up, the Busselton product has impressed coaches and teammates with his accuracy since joining the Dockers and he is also an agile presence at ground level for his size.

Amiss booted 51.15 for East Perth in the WAFL colts last year and has kicked 9.3 in three league outings for Peel this season.

While the left-footer’s first appearance will be one of the club’s most anticipated debuts, Longmuir warned the 18-year-old was still a work in progress.

“We’re not going to see the finished product by any stretch, he’s got a lot of work to do in the gym and fitness and he’s going to add layers and layers to his game,” he said.

“But he possesses some really good forward craft, he’s a good mark and he’s got high footy IQ and he can hit the scoreboard in different ways.

“So he’s an exciting prospect. He’s not the finished product yet, but I’m excited to see what he can deliver.”

Longmuir said Amiss was fit enough to play at AFL level after off-season knee and quad injuries.

“He’s been playing full game time at Peel and he’s been unrestricted in terms of game time at Peel for at least the last month,” he said.

“He’s been competing really hard at WAFL level and his GPS shows he’s ready to step up to AFL level.

“His last three games at Peel have been really solid. I’ve been really impressed with the way he has approached learning the game plan, learning the roles in the forward line.”

Amiss will become the third Docker to make his debut this season after Nathan O’Driscoll and Neil Erasmus.
