Ka Ying Rising wins the Everest, Jamie Melham creates history on Half Yours in Caulfield Cup

Superstar jockey Jamie Melham has created history as the first female jockey to win the Caulfield Cup.

Melham rode the short-priced Half Yours to victory after getting clear on the home straight.

Trained by father-and-son duo Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Half Yours beat River Of Stars in a thrilling finish.

Third home was Valiant King and Presage Nocturne was fourth.

“We talked about the pressure on her and how important today might be, and she joins Michelle Payne as a major winner, and first female to win a Caulfield Cup. And it was a 10 out of 10 ride,” Bruce McAvaney said.

Melham was overcome with emotion after the biggest win of her career.

“Just saying Caulfield Cup makes me cry,” she said.

“I’ve had an incredible career and ridden 17 Group 1s now but that major has eluded me and I just wanted to get one,” she told Channel 7.

Zac Purton has conceded superstar sprinter Ka Ying Rising was well below his best despite winning The Everest in dominant fashion.

The world’s best sprinter justified his standing with a comfortable victory, but it could have been even better.

“I don’t think we’ve seen him at his best today, but even when he’s not as his best, he’s still good enough,” Purton told Channel 7.

Ka Ying Rising has confirmed his standing as the world’s greatest sprinter with a commanding win in The Everest at Randwick on Saturday.

The Hong Kong superstar justified his short price to blitz the field in the $20m feature race.

Ka Ying Rising was in a class of his own as he burst clear 200m out to make it 14 wins in a row.

The victory was scarily achieved despite appearing to be below his absolute best.

“What a moment for Australian racing, and world racing,” Bruce McAvaney said.

Tempted finish second, while there was a photo for third with Jimmysstay pipping Overpass.

Winning trainer David Hayes said it was a “crowning” moment in his career.

“It was a long way down that straight, but when got clear I thought they were going to have to be pretty good to beat him,” he told Channel 7.

“I would have been so disappointed if he didn’t win when he saddled up calm.”
