West Coast have added East Perth forward Courtney Lindgren to their squad after defender Sophie McDonald was ruled out for the upcoming AFLW 2025 season.

The Royals forward made a strong start to the WALFW season, averaging 12.7 disposals and more than four marks from her six games this season, earning her state squad selection.

Having transitioned from a netball background, having been a training partner with the West Coast Fever, the 23-year-old has been noted for her aerial ability, while her speed also caught the eye of the Eagles.

“I’m feeling great about the opportunity. It’s something I never thought would be possible,” Lindgren said.

“I’ve been at the club doing a few training sessions and I received a phone call from Jordy to come in as a train-on. Daisy (Pearce) showed some interest in me, and I’m super grateful for that.

“I’m a target forward, but I can also work as a bit of a hybrid runner if needed. I can take a strong mark, contested or uncontested, and I’m pretty agile for my height.”

AFLW List Manager Jordan Loxley said they were excited to see what Lindgren can bring.

“We’ve been extremely impressed with her WAFLW campaign - the improvement she’s shown from last year to now is significant,” he said.

“Her speed, power and overhead marking stood out to us. Her composure and decision-making, particularly given her limited time in football, have also been very impressive.

“It’s a testament to Courtney’s work ethic and also reflects the quality of the development program that her coach Jenna Allomes and the East Perth team are delivering.”

It comes as the Eagles revealed key defender McDonald has been moved to the inactive list as the 24-year-old prioritises her mental health and wellbeing.

“As an inaugural player, Sophie is an integral part of our program. We’ll continue to support her throughout her recovery and are really looking forward to seeing her back out there next season,” Head of Women’s Football Michelle Cowan said.

“In the meantime, we’re excited to bring Courtney into the squad. She’s earned her opportunity, and we’re confident she’ll make the most of it.”

Lindgren also credited senior coach Pearce for her early support.

“Since joining the club Daisy has been very supportive and has really helped build my confidence and trust in the role I play within the team,” Lindgren said.

Currently recovering from a minor finger injury, Lindgren is expected to fully integrate with the group in the coming weeks.
