Former West Coast Eagles captain Oscar Allen set to be fit for Brisbane’s season opener

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan is confident his star recruit in former West Coast captain Oscar Allen is on track to be fit for the club’s season opener.
Allen landed at the Lions as a free agent in October in a move that secured the Eagles pick two in the AFL Draft, while the back-to-back reigning premiers also secured ruckman Sam Draper from Essendon.
Despite both arriving at the club with injury troubles, Fagan predicted Allen and Draper would be ready for their Opening Round clash against the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba on March 7.
“The expectation is that they’ll be right to play round one,” Fagan told SEN.
“In fact, they should be right to play at least one practice match, if not two. If there’s no setbacks, that’s what will happen.
“They’re both great characters… they’ve both been in leadership roles at their clubs, which is great because we lost a little bit of leadership.
“They’re training well at the moment, which is a bit of a surprise. I thought they might take a little bit longer. But they’re back in, albeit a little bit modified. Doing really well and enjoying the new environment.”’
Allen was restricted to only 12 games in his final season at the Eagles because of an Achilles and calf injury sustained in round 14 before he had season-ending knee surgery. Meanwhile, Draper ruptured his Achilles in April.
The 26-year-old departed the Eagles after kicking 151 goals from 105 games in eight seasons, having been drafted with pick No.21 in 2017 out of West Perth.
Allen was long-touted as a captain of the club, but left with the club receiving pick No.2 in this year’s draft as compensation.
The Eagles used that pick to draft talented Victorian big man Cooper Duff-Tytler, who has already impressed this summer as a forward-ruck.
It comes as Brisbane look to replicate the Lions side from 2001-2003 and claim a hat-trick of premierships, last achieved by Hawthorn from 2013-2015.
“The group likes a challenge,” Fagan said.
“There’s no better challenge than trying to win three in a row.
“Not many teams can do it. Hopefully they might be inspired by that. It’s a pretty tough thing to do, but this group’s got the ability to do it.”
Allen has had a busy off-season so far, marrying his long-time partner Lorna McNabb in Perth last week.
The nuptials were attended by several of his former West Coast teammates including young star Harley Reid and forward Jake Waterman.
Brisbane also bolstered their list at the draft, landing academy star Daniel Annable as well as West Australians Koby Evans — who was part of West Coast’s academy — and Claremont tall Cody Curtin.
West Coast brought in dual Brisbane premiership defender Brandon Starcevich through the trade period as well as Deven Robertson as a rookie after the Perth product was delisted.
