Guzman y Gomez removes popular item from menu, sparking outrage
A popular fast-food chain has quietly removed a popular menu item, with fans reacting to the devastating news on social media with a mix of sadness and anger.
Guzman y Gomez removed their plant-based shredded shiitake mushroom filling from their menu sometime last month, with the news being confirmed in the comments section of a TikTok post on Friday.
In a post advertising $10 burritos on delivery app Menulog until December 11, eagle-eyed fans noticed that a screen grab of the app showed the mushroom filling was missing from the menu.
“Bring back mushroom filling it is the only thing I order and I order every week,” one user commented.
The Mexican chain replied to the comment saying: “Sorry! For now the mushroom filling has been removed from the menu”.
The filling was first launched in 2021 and quickly became a favourite of both plant-based and meat-eating customers.
Mushroom lovers vented a range of emotions reacting to the news in the comments section.
“I don’t know who decided to take shredded mushrooms off the menu but I hope your pillow is warm on both sides!,” one commenter said.
“The only thing I think about daily while living overseas is a shredded mushroom Cali burrito. I hope to god it’s on the menu for my arrival home,” another said.
“Bring back the shredded mushroom no one likes the sauteed veggies … y’all just lost a lot of customers who don’t eat meat,” a third person wrote.
One particularly heartbroken customer said the shredded mushroom filling was “genuinely my death row meal and I will never be the same without it”.
Vegans and vegetarian customers have been left with just sauteed vegetables to fill their burritos and bowls.
A Guzman y Gomez spokesperson said they regularly review their menu offerings and decided to remove the mushroom filling due to a lack of sales.
“Unfortunately our shredded mushroom filling wasn’t selling enough to stay on our menu at this time,” they said.
“GYG are working on new menu items new in our test kitchen which are even more delicious so we hope to have some new menu innovations for our guests to try soon! Watch this space!”
