Wine gong for WA

Natalie BrownThe West Australian

A small Margaret River winery which opened its cellar door just 18 months ago is about to get a lot busier after its wine was named as one of the world's best drops.

Credaro Family Estate's Beach Head 2011 shiraz was named the best Red Rhone Varietal for a bottle costing more than 15 ($26) at London's Decanter World Wine Awards on Wednesday.

The family-owned winery was the only WA entrant to receive an international award from the five Australian wineries awarded on the night.

Cellar door manager Steve Bickett said the award was a huge achievement for the Credaro family and the Beach Head brand which, at just four years old, is a relative newcomer.

Owners Robert and Phyllis Credaro diverted their travel plans to collect their award in London. Mr Bickett said he was bracing for heightened interest in the winning wine but a small batch was made and only a few bottles remained.
