Car identified in fatal Spencer Park hit and run, driver released without charge as investigations continue

Police have identified the vehicle involved in a hit and run on Hardie Road in Albany’s Spencer Park that claimed the life of a 57-year-old woman last Wednesday night, but have not yet laid charges. The driver of the vehicle was arrested as a suspect on Friday, however was released without charge while investigations continue. Tributes have flowed for Bronwyn Clark, a healthcare worker who has been revealed as the victim in the tragedy. Albany police said the woman was lying on the roadway when she was struck by a dark-coloured, mid-sized sedan, with the driver failing to stop and render assistance. A vehicle matching this description was stopped by police about 10.30am on Friday morning in the Albany CBD and was identified as the vehicle involved in the crash, according to investigators. The car was seized for further forensic testing, which was continuing on Monday morning. Det-Sen. Sgt Hugh Letessier from the major crash investigation section spoke to reporters at the Albany police station on Friday afternoon, saying investigations would continue. “The driver has not been charged at this stage, there’s still quite a considerable amount of material that we need to go through to establish a number of facts around the incident, but we’re completely confident that we have the person responsible and that we have the vehicle that was involved,” he said. Emergency services responded to a triple-0 call made by witnesses at the scene just before 8pm on Wednesday, administering first aid to the unresponsive woman before transporting her to Albany Health Campus. However, Ms Clark’s injuries proved too severe, and she died in hospital a short time later. Det-Sen. Sgt Letessier said at the time of the incident, as captured on CCTV, the driver did not appear to have been driving recklessly or dangerously but could not have mistaken the fact that they had hit something on the road. “The vehicle deviated quite considerably, much like driving over a very, very aggressive speed hump, you would absolutely know that from the vehicle dynamics and movement that you’ve struck something,” he said. “The offence of striking a person with a motor vehicle and being involved in an incident that involves the injury of a person carries significant penalty.”
