Residents in the Shire of Collie are being warned to get ready to leave because of a threat to lives and homes from an out-of-control bushfire.

A bushfire watch and act is in place for people in the vicinity of Piavnini Road, west of Stockton Lake and including the Collie Motorcross Circuit in Shotts, in the Shire of Collie.

Residents with plans to leave in the event of a bush fire have been urged to leave now.

They should keep door and windows closed and turn off evaporative air conditioners but keep water running through the system to prevent embers entering their home.

Authorities say the cause of the incident, which was reported at 11.22am, is suspicious.

Parks and Wildlife Service is managing the fire, which is moving in a north-westerly direction.

Motorists have been urged to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully. Some roads may be closed.

Residents near the Stockton Lake recreation area in Shotts have been told to monitor conditions.

While there is no threat to lives and homes in that area, there is a lot of smoke.
