Dozer the labrador reunited with Geraldton family after two weeks in pound following dangerous dog declaration

Geraldton’s most famous canine, Dozer the labrador, has been reunited with his family after almost two weeks locked in a cage after being declared a dangerous dog. The seizure, which prompted community outrage, came after an incident between Dozer and a woman walking her German shepherd on Thursday, August 14 was reported to council. Rangers seized the seven-year-old dog the next day. The city stated there had been a previous attack involving Dozer, but the dog’s owner Jill Weller claims she is not aware of any other incident or complaint. City of Greater Geraldton CEO Ross McKim was pleased to confirm the reunion on Thursday afternoon. “This outcome follows proactive engagement between city officers and the owner to ensure their property meets compliance standards and supports community safety,” he said. “We recognise the important role pets play in our lives and the strong bonds they form within households. However, pet ownership comes with clear responsibilities.” All dog owners as a minimum are expected to ensure their pets are securely contained within a fenced area, walked on a lead in public spaces and registered and microchipped. “The city remains committed to prioritising the safety and wellbeing of all residents, and we thank our community for supporting responsible pet ownership,” Mr McKim said. Dozer’s owner appealed the dangerous dog declaration to the State Adminstrative Tribunal. The matter is set for a further hearing on September 12. Ms Weller said it was a “huge relief to have Dozer released from the pound, happy tears all around.” She is waiting for the council to provide evidence of the dangerous dog declaration as ordered by the SAT prior to the next hearing.
