Fire destroys structure at Welshpool business, sends smoke across Perth
Fire has torn through a Welshpool business this evening, sending smoke across Perth’s inner eastern suburbs.
Within an hour of ignition, the blaze destroyed an office building at the Planet Street business, with fire crews forced to call in a dozen appliances.
The initial report to Fire and Rescue Service was received just after 9am, for the building belonging to mining company RCR Tomlinson.
Firefighters arrived to find the tin and brick structure, at the front of the large industrial site, fully involved.
Flames could be seen coming from the hollowed-out frame which was understood to have been only used as office space, with larger machinery and material in warehouses just metres away.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
More than two hours after it sparked the blaze was still out of control, prompting the Department of Fire and Emergency Services to issue a warning to people in the immediate area.
With thick smoke blowing north of Planet Street towards Orrong Road and west of Briggs Street towards Oats Street in Carlisle, people in the area were urged to remain inside as a “precautionary measure”, with doors and windows should be closed and air conditioners switched off.
A group of people in fluorescent work shirts and long pants could be seen watching on from a warehouse at the back of the structure.
WA Police were called to the scene and assisted with traffic management. Western Power and ATCO were also called to the area to isolate utilities.
