Out-of-control inferno razes Neerabup rubbish yard overnight

Firefighters worked tirelessly through the night to contain an out-of-control blaze at a rubbish yard in Neerabup.

The inferno, which raged through an area of 80 x 80m, sparked about 12.10pm on Flynn Drive, prompting a hazardous smoke warning for residents in the area.

Multiple fire stations and dozens of firefighters responded to the blaze, which took several hours to bring under control.

By 2pm a Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said firefighters managed to border the blaze, but it still took several more hours to contain and control.

Firefighters remained at the scene overnight containing any flare-ups and spot fires that sparked.

A DFES hazmat warning is still in place for residents in the City of Wanneroo area, including Carramar and Banksia.

“The fire is resulting in potentially dangerous smoke blowing to surrounding suburbs,” a DFES statement read.

“As a precautionary measure, people in the area should remain inside, out of the smoke or fumes, with doors and windows closed. Air conditioners should also be switched off.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
