Shocking vision reveals Dianella woman’s horror as pair of vicious dogs hospitalise her and kill her pet

A Dianella woman is recovering from surgery and her pet is dead after they were attacked by two dogs on Saturday morning. Horrific footage of the attack shows the woman being set upon around 6.40am on Sycamore Rise. She comes into view of the camera holding her small dog in her arms and retreating up the hill as one of the dogs nips at her and tries to latch onto her terrified pet. A second dog comes running towards her. The two snarling, out-of-control animals jump at her, trying to drag her dog from her. The screaming woman, who lives on a nearby street, fights back for 40 seconds and tries to protect her pet before collapsing on a drive way. The dogs drag her pet from her and starting mauling the much smaller animal near the road before the owner gets to her feet and tries to rescue her pet, which has had its stomach torn open and is bleeding heavily. Close to 90 seconds after the attack began a neighbour armed with two sticks runs to the woman’s aid, warding off the dogs as the distraught victim tends to her wounded pet. Rangers were called and the dogs were brought under control before being taken away. City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin said the two attacking dogs had been impounded. “A third dog was seriously injured in the attack and later euthanised,” he said. “Its owner also sustained injuries and our thoughts are with her.” The woman’s hands and arms had been badly cut during the ordeal. She had surgery on Saturday evening and has been recovering since. “These situations can be very distressing for all involved,” Mr Irwin said. “We have spoken to witnesses and the owners of the dogs as part of our ongoing investigation.” WA Police said that at this stage the incident was a civil, not criminal matter. RSPCA WA chief operating officer Hannah Dreaver said the attack was “shocking to watch”. “Our hearts go out to the attacked dog and owner, both of whom are plainly and rightly terrified,” she said. “Dogs with this level of aggression are clearly dangerous, capable of causing death. It is unacceptable for them to have been loose on the street. “Responsible dog ownership includes ensuring dogs are securely confined to their property and appropriately supervised. “More broadly, early socialisation and positive training is a must to help dogs develop into well-adjusted, safe companions. “Providing adequate enrichment, exercise and understanding a dog’s behaviour are key to reducing the risk of aggression and promoting safe interactions with people and other animals.”
