Spring in the Perth Hills is synonymous with wildflowers, waterfalls and walking, and a new festival is coming to traverse the region.

The inaugural Perth Hills WanderFest has been announced for September 26-29, inviting hikers of all abilities to slip on their boots and follow trails in Gidgegannup, Kalamunda, Chidlow, Bedfordale and Jarrahdale.

Award-winning tour operators The Hike Collective and Off the Beaten Track WA have collaborated to present a series of hikes that take in the majesty of the Hills in spring, offering opportunities to marvel at nature at every turn.

For beginners, there is the 3km loop at FR Berry Reserve — referred to as one of the most underrated pockets of wilderness in Perth — or experienced hikers can tackle Kitty’s Gorge to witness Serpentine Falls.

Youths are welcomed to venture to Piesse Brooke to spot fairy wrens, while seniors can roam the relaxed 5km trail at Armadale Settlers Common.

For an accessible option, Lake Leschenaultia offers a low-impact yet sensory-rich walk suitable for wheelchairs, prams or walking aids, with plenty of spots to rest along the way and take in the scenery.

Destination Perth chief executive Sonja Mitchell says WanderFest will showcase the beauty and diversity of Perth Hills’ world-class trails.

“We hope hikers will make a day of it by exploring some of the unique pubs, cafes, wineries and retailers that give the area character,” Ms Mitchell says.

Perth Hills Tourism Alliance chair Barbara Hugill adds the community focus is a key part of WanderFest.

“This collaborative event showcases the trails, landscapes and local businesses that make our region so special,” Ms Hugill says.

“It’s a powerful example of what’s possible when passionate tourism partners unite behind a shared vision.”

A downloadable guide to ensure visitors can return to safely explore the trails at their leisure will be available later this year.

+ Hike tickets are $30, while support workers and carers can attend free of charge.

+ Tickets are available from July 1 via experienceperthhills.com.au.
