Bar & Bites: Margaret River Beer Co celebrates decade of beers with 10th annual Backyard Brewing tournament

If you are reading this now, it’s because I am dead … dead keen on trying what homebrewers have in store for this year’s Margaret River Beer Co Backyard Brewing tournament. Since 2016, WA’s amateur braumeisters have produced an incredible array of beers for the annual competition. Previous winners have included everything from a saison and trappist single to a Munich Helles and various impeccable Weissbiers. One champion even made an American IPA. Notably Travis Moore and mates made an American-style Phat porter in 2020 before turning their hobby into a thriving business, specifically Phat Brew Club in West Perth. While Bar & Bites joins the other judges at Margaret River Beer Co’s brewery today (June 14), on June 20 the public will get a taste of victory (and runners-up) at the 10th annual awards night held at the popular Brewhouse. Extra taps pour all nine previous champion beers and, for the first time, there will be more prize categories, including different styles. More anything? More everything! In more good news for beer lovers, MRBCo is also rolling out this year’s Panther Cream in two versions, rum barrel-aged imperial stout and whiskey barrel-aged imperial stout, just in time for winter. If that wasn’t enough, the South West brewer also scored two major gongs at this year’s Royal Perth Beer Awards, taking out champion beer with their hazy IPA, In The Pines, which also won the IPA draught category. Cheers all ‘round. HIT THE BOOKS In other good local brew news, the crafty boffins at Campus Brewing have launched a second venue, this time in Wangara. Campus began as Brew University in early 2018, when some studious beer fans took over a defunct brew-on-premise business in Canning Vale. This graduated a few years later into a fully-fledged venue. The northern Campus at 2a Arrigo Street, Wangara is open every day, bar Tuesdays. Check socials for daily hours. OF ALL THE WORLD GIN DAY JOINTS World Gin Day is today, June 14, and the team at Old Young’s in the Swan Valley are celebrating with free G&T sorbet created with neighbours SubZero Gelato. Old Young’s founder James Young will be out the front of the venue, slinging gin ice-cream, while inside Old Young’s Kitchen, $10 negronis will be served all day. The Swan Valley favourite has also launched a new cocktail menu, Volume Two, inspired by US hip-hop group Arrested Development’s classic 1992 debut album 3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days In The Life Of … Each drink is a pun-laden nod to a track on the album. There’s the fruity Pina Everyday, zesty low-alc Give a Man a Spritz and the winter spice concoction Mr Experimental. Old Young’s Distillery is offering 10 per cent off all spirits, while any purchase of Gingin Gin from the online store between June 9 and 15 will include two Gingin Gin glasses and a bottle of Fever Tree tonic.
