Jack Della Maddalena has proven he is the real deal and a future welterweight world champion, turning around what looked to be a certain defeat to beat former contender Gilbert Burns by TKO at UFC 299 on Sunday.

Della Maddalena (17-2) was caught on the mat by the grappling sensation and was doing his best to thwart several submission attempts by Burns (22-7).

It looked as if Burns was going to grapple for the remainder of the third round until Della Maddalena managed to roll out of the control, scramble to his feet and land a brutal knee to the veteran.

It stunned Burns, and from there Della Maddalena pounced, landing several massive elbows before the referee stopped the fight to hand him an incredible seventh consecutive win in the UFC.

Della Maddalena had the best of the first round thanks to his striking and reach, but impressively he was able to get back to his feet from several takedowns by Burns.

The four-time jiu jitsu world champion was dominant in the second round, landing a brutal elbow on the left eye of Della Maddalena as well as a big right hand that stunned the West Australian.

It meant that the final round was set to decide the fight and Della Maddalena picked up the pace as he walked down Burns forcing him to shoot for a takedown and take back control.

All Burns had to do from there was control the rest of the round and he was on his way to a big decision victory.

But Della Maddalena had other ideas, getting the fight back to the feet where he dominated to set up a win that launched him into the top 10 of the welterweight rankings.

“It feels good. My plan was to come here, grab the cash and dash,” Della Maddalena said post-fight.

“I knew I hurt him (with the knee). He stayed in there a long time, he’s the man.

“There’s some scary people in this division but I’m the f...ing scariest.”

Della Maddalena called out undefeated welterweight Shavkat Rakhmonov (18-0) after the fight, believing they could tackle in a title eliminator with the winner to face champion Leon Edwards.
