Farmers from across the Shire of Lake Grace joined forces to extinguish a blaze near Newdegate on Monday.

About 100 firefighting units worked in the 40C heat and gusting winds to contain a fire that started at Holland Track and burned for about 7km, scorching about 1500ha of paddocks and native bushland.

Hollands Rock farmer Hayden Garlick said he counted 37 units, mostly manned by local farmers, in just one paddock.

“The fire spread at a cracking pace, and it was a supreme effort by everybody involved to get things under control,” he said.

“There was a bit of damage, but fortunately no stock losses that I know of, so that’s a good thing.”

Locals have co-ordinated a clean up of the area.
